I know we still have a month but....
I was wondering what you all do for Easter??? Do you celebrate it? If so what do you do? What do you cook? What kinds of goodies do you make? What do you put in your kiddos Easter baskets?
Re: I know we still have a month but....
I'm not sure what we're doing this year. Usually we have it here, and I make a whole fresh ham; but we're gonna be getting ready to move; so I'm not sure yet.
Re: I know we still have a month but....
We have an Easter egg hunt and baskets at my parents house in the morning. Then we go to lous grandmas for brunch. Then back to my parents later.
It's going to be julias first easter so I don't know what I will do for her basket. Her birthday is 4 days later so she is going to get over run with toys so I don't want to go over board but since it's her first Easter I want to do something we can make a tradition.

I always make a trsaditional Easter lunch...ya know ham, mashed potatos with gravy, corn, homemade green beans with red potatos the way my grandma made them, rolls, and mac and cheese for the kids and pistachio salad. Also snacky stuff like fresh veggies, dips and deviled eggs. I always change the desserts up each yr not sure what we are doing this yr.
The kids have an egg hunt here, I wish I could dress them in all those cute dresses, but we are lucky if we don't still have snow on Easter at very least it's still cold! The kids also get baskets filled with candy and a few things they really want. We don't go all out, but we try to make it nice.....

We usually have a sandwich lunch at the Compound, complete with an Easter Egg hunt where all of the kids get to go and kill each other looking for eggs.
I miss Easters of my childhood when my parents and I would attend the Vigil mass where new people were baptized, etc. into the church... it lasted such a long time and the church was beautiful, decorated with flowers and in candlelight as well as being full of the scent of incense and the sounds of people rejoicing.
I've fallen away from my religious roots, but the memories are so sweet and all so beautiful. After mass, we would go home and eat some babka (Polish Easter bread) and kielbasi then hit the sack. On Easter morning, we'd always have ham and eggs and more babka and Easter goodies that my mom often made.
To this day, my mom makes a lamb cake each year at Easter. (It's a lamb-form that she pours the cake batter into). As a kid, she would frost it and cover the whole thing with coconut so it looked like a wolly lamb. Well, my brother doesn't like coconut and has been vocal about it in his older age, so Mom has started putting coconut on only HALF the lamb cake and leaving the other half just frosted. My husband, heathen that he is, asked during his first Easter with us, "Why did your mom make a DOG for Easter?" SOOOO, the cake is now deemed a shaved poodle in honor of our Easter celebrations. Yes, she still makes it, and yes, we still eat it. And yes, we all laugh through it all!!
Wow... *that* was a bit of oversharing, wasn't it?

Tess--Did you guys have fresh ham or smoked ham?
The only people I know who eat fresh ham are the Polish; and its one of my favorite foods in the entire world.
Any time I talk about it; people have no clue what I'm talking about---everyone always thinks that all ham is smoked and pink!

Re: I know we still have a month but....
Tess- Every holiday includes kielbasa in our family even though we aren't Polish! My in-laws bought their home and raised their 13 kids in the heart of what used to be the Polish neighborhood so my husband grew up eating kielbasa.
Even though I am not Christian my family is so we celebrate Easter but in more of a secular bunnies and candy way. Our traditions are that you can't gorge yourself on candy until after you've eaten some of the dyed hard-boiled eggs for breakfast (and I pretend not to notice while the eggs are fed to the dog )and the Easter Bunny always brings small outdoor toys like bubbles, sidewalk chalk, or kites.
Jenifer- I always dressed my kids in cute new spring outfits the covered them up with the winter coats on snowy Easters.

If we are just with our side of the family, we do a fresh ham. If we get together at the Compound and with my SIL's family, it's smoked. ;o) Crazy Polish people!

Julia is my first and last. We are only having one child.
K, I forgot about you talking about a fresh ham. I think I will have to see where I can get one around here. We have several meat markets near us and they are all Polish, so I'm sure I can find one. How do you cook a fresh ham?

I have but the kids just complain how cold they are....I just do more wintery type dresses for the girls and normal dress clothes for the boys with ties ....I have before just let them not dress up once or twice but ut doesn't feel the same when they don't lol.....
Kim - I thought she was your only, just wasn't sure when you said kids. Emilee my youngest (4) has a bday on Dec 27, so she has the same issue that you were talking about with Julia....trying to balance the 2 out. Her bday stinks much more, she ends up getting so jipped, lol
Re: I know we still have a month but....
If Im feeling able we do an easter egg hunt and baskets. But Im not Christian its just something I do for fun.
I actually just celebrated Eostre or Ostara the spring equinox (from which the word Easter derives) by meditating, clearing out debris in my yard and planting some herbs. Its a time to reflect on the balance of light and dark and the coming fertility of spring.
This years was bittersweet as a very close friend of mine had just passed who was also a pagan so I did my little rituals to honor her.

Kim-- you make it like you would make a turkey in the oven; prop it up in a rack, and roast it until the internal temperature is 155---take it out, and then you'll have awesome drippings for gravy
Re: I know we still have a month but....
Ok ladies...leave us Polish people alone! Hahahahaha... I personally don't care. Kielbasa makes me sick just thinking about it...used to have it every week growing up. Won't go near it! Yuk!!
I always do a simple spiral ham with mashed potatoes and veggies. Probably will make some kind of dessert. It's just us, so nothing too ambitious! We do the egg hunt in the house - plastic eggs stuffed with candy and money. Make a big breakfast too. We really don't celebrate 'Easter' traditionally. It's always been about the bunny, candy and spring/summer toys!
