Tips on working with board books Empty Tips on working with board books

I love playing with board books. I wanted to share some ideas and tips for making your own projects with them!

Types of Projects

First there are two kinds of projects I like to make with board books. The first is to create an open board book to display a set of photos from an event.

An example:

Another one that I intended to open half way, and sit on a shelf.

A similar project is the photo memento cards I made for some freaks:

How To Tips

Both of the above projects are made in similar ways. Key steps:

  1. First, cut the spine off the board book
  2. For the memento cards, cut two boards away from the rest
  3. Sand the boards, especially near the edges to help prep it
  4. Cut your paper - it should be just a bit more narrow than the width of the boards
  5. Paint the edges and center seam of the pages/book so you are sure no text or pics will show along the edge or seam later (ALT: I prefer to use a sharpie instead of paint. It adheres much better, and is easier. But it is not acid free so its your call.)
  6. Adhere paper to the book, aligning it to the outside edge and leaving a bit of space in the center of the card or book
  7. Let the paper dry
  8. Sand the paper at the edges of book to help create rounded corners if needed and to make sure its smooth
  9. Add pics and embellies

Additional tips:

If you cover the pages all the way to center seam of the book, it will NOT close. It will bulge from the extra thickness. Try leaving a space like I did with mine. Also I like to FAN the book open for display, so I don't care that it does not close all the way.

Also I prefer to use a wet adhesive to put the paper onto the book. Play close attention to the corners and edges.

I also recommend thicker paper for covering the books

**Try covering the edges with embossing power for a really cool look (like I did on the "she" book above)**

Where to Find Books:

Try these places to get books:

  1. Good Will and thrift stores
  2. Garage sales or church fund raisers
  3. Dollar Stores
  4. Sale items after holidays in children's section of book stores
  5. You kid's room :gigglebox:

I love the one you made me...it sits on one of my shelves in my scraproom. Smile We get a lot of the cardboard books in the dollar section at work. I always debate on buying them but I haven't really scrapped this much so they would just pile up downstairs.
