Evacuation! What do you take?
I came across a post on one of the doll forums asking if you would take your dolls with you if you had to evacuate. Most posters responded that they would probably take them if they had time to pack their car but if they were in immediate danger, like a house fire, they would certainly worry about people and pets first! And the question that always pops up on scrapping forums: Would you attempt to save your scrapbooks in an emergency evacuation?

Re: Evacuation! What do you take?
If I were being evacuated I would probably take my dolls, at least the customs. If I were in immediate danger I doubt I would worry about the dolls. My priorities would be:
1. people
2. pets
3. purse contents (ID, bank card, meds, etc.)
4. photo CD's & family paperwork (birth certificates, passports, etc.) stored in the same case
5. family heirloom jewelry (that I should probably move to the same case as items in #4)
6. custom dolls
7. scrapbooks- they rank this low because I would first try to save my photo CD's and then could re-scrap the images
My stock dolls and other collectibles could be replaced whereas the items listed above couldn't be!

Re: Evacuation! What do you take?
Living in hurricane/tornado areas, I have thought about this a lot.
I would save my laptop and CDs, but the paper scrapbook copies, which I keep in plastic, would have the fend for themselves, sadly... too much and too many. I keep 40-75 large plastic bins in the storage area, so if I had a day's warning, I could get most everything into bins and pack them into the pantry on shelves, where they are least likely to flood or lose the roof.
But fire? No way to save them, no safe is big enough...
There is some humor in having a portable safe--here, thieves, it's all right here for you to roll it away...

Re: Evacuation! What do you take?
i've thought about this and always come down to ... if there's a fire, i just need to put it out. there's too much stuff i'd want to save lol
Re: Evacuation! What do you take?
this is somehwat humorous--having been in a hotel fire, I always leave a robe and shoes by the door "just in case" b/c one year in Orlando on a business trip racing out into the lobby in a nightie and the only shoes I could find, high heels...
My mom and my friends who have lived through house fires and lost everything say: grab underwear. It's hard to live without clean underwear. And they are not joking!

Re: Evacuation! What do you take?
I would go for people first, then my purse, then the laptop and then scrapbooks
Re: Evacuation! What do you take?
I keep my medications is a zip-up bag for just this reason. I could not go one day without them.
my albums would not be as much of a priority as some other things but they would be high on the list...

Re: Evacuation! What do you take?
Family & pets first, purse & cell, laptop & external hd, pictures (most is backed up off site in case of fire) and anything else I can grab. Everything else can be replaced. I have pics of every page/project I've completed. Since I'm still new and don't have a 'supply' of scrapbooks, I can easily redo them all.
I don't want to ever experience a house fire or a flooded basement. That would be horrible.

Re: Evacuation! What do you take?
No joke... I keep my finished books in a hope chest by the front door along with kitty carrying crates and baggies of food at all times! My scrapbooks would ABSOLUTELY be coming with! We have no children so I just have to worry about getting my husband and cats and myself out okay. We could get evacuated at any time during hurricane season (its happened) and Ive got my methods!
Re: Evacuation! What do you take?
Oh, my goodness! I really don't like thinking about things like this, but obviously my priorities would be people and pets. My sentimentality tells me that next is the external hard drive and scrapbooks (as if I could carry them all!) but practicality tells me my cell phone and meds should be pretty high on the list, too. We don't live in an area likely to be evacuated, but a fire is of course always a possibility *shudder*. I'm feeling like going out and getting a fire safe box for our important papers right now!

Re: Evacuation! What do you take?
I have a big backpack ready in case of evacuation - copies of all documents in water proof zip lock bags, canned food, can opener, toilet paper, first aid kit, wind up torch, spare batteries just in case and a few other bits and pieces.
If I had the chance I would grab my albums otherwise only my discs with all our photos.
My children and husband would be first priority though.

Re: Evacuation! What do you take?
Just a PSA- If you really have a fire please please please just get yourself and your children out. I knew a woman who went back back upstairs to grab her purse and died. All ID can be replaced. Nothing is worth your life. :getting off my soapbox:
If it were an evacuation (like for a hurricane or something else where I have some time) Id grab:
My laptop and desktop or just my external backup drives if I didn't have room
My dolls
My portable safe with documents and IDs
My stuffed bears
Id rather pack some clothes and other electronics like our tvs than pack my scrapbooks.

I guess some clothes and a toothbrush would be a good idea!

Re: Evacuation! What do you take?
nah they have toothbrushes at all those places they make evacuated people go to
Um. My purse, which has all my crap. My piggy and my puppy. A couple of my scrapbooks, we have a waterproof/fireproof external hd, I'd grab that, My netbook. My journal.

Re: Evacuation! What do you take?
If I were evacuating and had time, I'd take the scrapbooks.
If it were a fire, I'd grab my dog and my purse and run like hell (there was a close call earlier this year, so I got to practice doing this). If i had time, I'd snatch up my camera too, b/c it's near my purse and on the way out the door.
Although I'd be heartbroken to lose my scrapbooks, to me nothing is worth risking life and limb for. This is also another reason I'm glad to have my scrappy gallery online. Even if they burn up, at least I can look at my pages that way.

good point about having stuff online Laura
makes sense, and maybe that will push me to blog more ... putting layouts online plus capturing family stories
